There are a few ways to do this:
- You can drill holes in the stump, apply a commercially sold stump killer or some rock salt, and then wait a few years for the stump to decay.
- If it’s in a flower bed or out of the way and the stump is cut flush to the ground you can just cover it with mulch. (This is the cheapest way.)
- You can rent a small stump grinder from Home Depot. The stores in my area have a 13hp model for $111 (4 hours)/$159 (full day) or a 31hp model for $216 (4 hours)/$309 (full day). These would be good for stumps with a diameter up to 24″ and a height up to 6″. Things you need to ask yourself:
- How long will it take? a) Drive to the store, check out and pay for the machine. b) Hopefully get a 15 minute lesson on how to work it. c) Hook it up to your truck’s trailer hitch. (Do you have a truck with a trailer hitch? You can pay extra to have it delivered.) d) Drive it back to your house. e) Set it up and start grinding. (I hope the teeth are sharp.)
- If it is a medium to large stump, be prepared to grind for hours.
- Chips, rocks and other debris can fly everywhere. It’s amazing the amount of damage or physical harm a fast flying pebble can cause. (We have insurance that covers damages. Do you?)
